LÖWEL Journal is a student-led and youth-focused art publication based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, dedicated to giving classical art a new life through modern interpretation. Each edition connects historical works to contemporary social issues, showing that art is not separate from the world around it, but deeply shaped by identity, power, politics, and human experience.

The name LÖWEL is inspired by Löwelstraße, a street in Vienna that runs behind the Burgtheater and stops just before reaching the Hofburg Palace. To us, that image reflects the role of art itself: present in the background of culture, close to power and performance, but not above society.

Rather than idealizing classical art as untouchable, LÖWEL treats it as something alive. Through visual analysis and themed editions, we invite younger readers to see old works through new questions.

Our mission is to make timeless, historical art more accessible to the younger generation by analyzing it through modern social issues.
